The board of the St Monica’s Senior High School (SHS) at Asante Mampong has recommended a reshuffle of the housemistresses of the school.
The board among others also asked for proper record keeping, frequent house meetings with students and an audit of the washrooms.
The recommendations follow the death of a 17-year-old student, Miss Patience Amanyi at the Mampong Hospital on May 16, 2023.
According the deceased’s family, her death was due to negligence on the part of the management of the school.
The family alleged that Patience reported sick but the school authorities did not show interest in taking care of her and was virtually in the care of her colleague students.
When her condition worsened, the family alleged that her school mates took her to the Mampong Hospital where she died.
School board investigation
Graphic Online understands that the board of the school after a preliminary investigation in collaboration with the old students association established that the headmistress does not know what goes on in the various dormitories.
“She does not have close contact with the students, there are no meetings with the house mistresses, the lines of communications between the heads are inadequate,” a report from the meeting between the board, the management and the old students association seen by Graphic Online stated.
A report presented to the board by the headmistress on the incident has been dismissed on the grounds that, it contained a lot of discrepancies and inaccurate information.
What happened?
A source has told Graphic Online that on Saturday, May 13, 2023, Patience Amanyi complained of a headache and asked for an exeat to go to the hospital because the school infirmary is closed on weekends.
According to the source, the exeat was granted and Patience went to the Mampong General Hospital.
When Patience returned from the hospital, the house mistress refused to accept the exeat form because it had not been signed by the hospital.
The house mistress reportedly told the board that she thought Patience would return to the hospital to have the exeat form signed.
Although Patience still felt unwell, she was not immediately given an exeat to return to the hospital, the source added.
Patience could not stay in the dormitory and had to be carried to classes. On May 15, one of her teachers noted in class that she was very sick and asked her to return to the hospital.
The source said Patience went for another exeat on Tuesday May 16, from the second housemistress.
It said the house mistress did not even see Patience but gave the exeat to the Prefect accompanying Patience to the hospital through the window because she (house mistress) was busy.
It said at 7:30pm, the prefect together with two other students took Patience to the hospital. At the hospital, the students called the house mistress to let her know Patience’s case was serious.
The source said the house mistress then informed the Senior Housemistress who also called the Assistant Head for Domestic to go to the hospital. They were at the hospital till Patience was declared dead around 9:30pm.
Doctor’s diagnosis
The doctor’s diagnosis stated “Hypoglycaemia, Acute infective gastroenteritis with severe dehydration complicated by shock, Cerebral malaria with focal seizures.”
The doctor also indicated that Patience came in, comatose.
Patience has since been laid to rest.

The Anglican Bishop of Asante-Mampong, the Rt Rev. Cyril Kobina Ben-Smith, was elected Archbishop of the Anglican Church of Ghana at a special meeting of the Internal Province of Ghana Synod on January 15, 2021, at the Cathedral Church of St Cyprian the Martyr.
He was chosen as the successor to the Most Rev. Dr Daniel Yinkah Sarfo, Bishop of Kumasi and Metropolitan Archbishop of Ghana, who will retire on February 12, 2021.
Archbishop-elect Dr Ben-Smith will hold the post until he retires or leaves office.
Dioceses
The Internal Province of Ghana currently has 11 dioceses: Accra, Koforidua, Ho, Sekondi-Takoradi, Kumasi, Cape-Coast, Sefwi-Wiawso, Tamale, Sunyani, Asante-Mampong and Dunkwa-on-Offin.
Born on February 21, 1964, to Venerable Andrew Ben-Smith (former Anglican Priest) and Mrs Augustina Ben-Smith (both of blessed memory), Archbishop-Elect Dr Ben-Smith obtained Theological Education (Licentiate with Distinction) at the St Nicholas Anglican Seminary, Cape Coast—Ghana, 1985-1988.
He was ordained into the Diaconate St Cyprian Cathedral Church on December 18, 1988, by Rt Rev. Edmund Kojo Yeboah, then Anglican Bishop of Kumasi, and ordained into Priesthood on August 13, 1989, at St Justin’s Anglican Church, Nkawie by Rt. Rev Edmund Kojo Yeboah, Anglican Bishop of Kumasi.
Ordination
He was ordained and consecrated as Suffragan Bishop under the Anglican Diocese of Kumasi on May 22, 2011, by the Most Rev Dr Justice Ofei Akrofi, Archbishop of the Church of the Province of West Africa and enthroned as first Diocesan Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of Asante Mampong on November 30, 2014.
He has a Master of Arts Degree in Religion, Majored in Philosophy of Religion, Apologetics and Comparative religions at Asia United Theological 1990-1992. Master of Philosophy Research, Majored in Sociology of Religion, New Religious Movements, University of Wales, Cardiff, United Kingdom, 2001-2004 and Doctor of Philosophy, Manchester University, United Kingdom, 2007-2010.
The Archbishop-elect has also served in various capacities such as Vice Dean, St Nicholas Anglican Seminary, Cape Coast, Ghana 2007-2010; Chairman of Academic Board, St Nicholas Anglican Seminary, Cape Coast, Ghana 2004-2010; Visiting scholar, Selly Oak College, University of Birmingham, 2007-2008.
Bishop Dr Cyril is currently Chairman of Council of St Monica’s College of Education, Asante Mampong 2017; Member of Council Anglican University College of Technology, Ghana; Member of Board of Ghana Teaching Council; Bishop in Charge of Human Resources and Development Desk, Church of the Province of West Africa; Chairman of Council Ejuraman Anglican Senior High School, Ejura; Chairman of Board of Governors, Mampong Babies Home; Chairman of St Monica’s Senior High Schools, and Member of Board of Trustees, St Nicholas Seminary, Cape Coast.
Rt Rev. Cyril Kobina Ben-Smith is married to Christina Ben-Smith (Nee Beur) with three children: Nana Adjoa, Paula and Robert.
The Archbishop-elect will be enthroned on February 27, 2021 at St Michael and All Angels Cathedral Church, Asante-Mampong.

The facility is estimated at GH¢75,000.00 and can be used for playing volley ball, basketball and table tennis.
It will also help the students to train in various sports disciplines to make them competitive during inter schools sports competitions.
The donation was made as part of activities to commemorate 40 years after graduating from the school and to motivate the students to take sports seriously to enhance its development.
Mrs Grace Frimpong, who spoke on behalf of the 1979 year group, told the Daily Graphic that their vision was to support the school to develop sports holistically and nurture the students to be self-confident .
“Our goal and vision is looking at sport holistically, being physical, emotional and spiritual. Engaging in sports with healthy competitive approach will help to enhance self-confidence and positive attitude among students,” she said.
Sports development
The Headmistress of the school, Mrs Esther Ntodwah, commended the 1979 year group for donating such a unique facility, saying, it would contribute to the development of the school’s sports disciplines.
She expressed appreciation to the various past old students for their tireless effort to help in carving an enviable niche for the school.
“I congratulate members of the 1979 year group on your immense contribution towards the development of your Alma Mater,” she said.

Nine former students of the St Monica’s Senior High School (SHS) at Mampong in the Ashanti Region have been honoured after successfully completing a three-year waste management programme during their stay in school.
They were each presented with a certificate of participation and a laptop computer, and have all been paired with mentors, both in Ghana and abroad, to guide them throughout their tertiary education pursuits.
It was organised by Smile for Child Ghana, a non-governmental organisation which seeks to “unlock the potential in inexperienced, vulnerable but intelligent young ladies”.
Community service
The project was dubbed ” I Made It”, one of the modules of Smile for Child Ghana, which focused on character building, general knowledge, educational trips and community service.
Under the community service module, students were tasked to collect used sachet water bags on the compound, sort them out and pack them in bigger bags, which were sold to recycling companies, and the rest transformed into bricks.
The money realised from the sale of the plastic bags will be used to run a compost shed in the school.
Maiden awards
Speaking at the maiden awards ceremony at the St Monica’s SHS recently, the Executive Director of Smile for Child Ghana, Ms Dorcas Naana Nusi, reiterated the NGOs mission “to groom intelligent but unassertive and reserved young ladies from rural and closed communities to develop confidence and self-esteem that will enable them to excel in their endeavours”.
Also present were the Headmistress of the school, Ms Esther Ntodwa, the Assistant Head, Administration, Rev. Fr Dr David Okyere Korankye, some housemistresses, tutors, the alumni, and parents of the awardees.
Ms Nusi expressed gratitude to the management and staff of the school for their efforts towards the realisation of the ” I Made It” programme.
The executive director took the opportunity to appeal to philanthropists and other benevolent bodies to partner the organisation and help nurture more young girls into responsible adults.
Commendation
For her part, the headmistress assured the NGO that their doors were always open for such productive partnership programmes, which she admitted were testimony to the quality of lives of her students.
She said the programme had made the school ‘a litter-free zone’, and proposed same for other secondary schools.

The membership of the Association is open to:
- Former Students of the School who were enrolled in the School up to completion
- Persons who attended the School for at least once academic year
- Companions, being spouses or partners of former students
Honorary and associate membership may be conferred on:
- Current and former staff and tutors of the School on application to the Council and
- Such other person as the Council may determine
The Secretariat shall keep a register of the names of the various category of membership.
Honorary, associate, companion and former staff and tutors do not have voting rights and do not count toward a quorum of a meeting of the Association.
The Association is part of the Union of Old St. Monican Schools.
